Attorneys for Christa Pike announced that the Tennessee prisoner has regained consciousness and is able to speak, according to a press conference held following her survival of a botched execution attempt last week. The development comes after Pike remained in critical condition, on a ventilator, following the September 30 incident.
Pike was scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries. However, the lethal injection procedure failed to carry out the sentence after she survived two doses of pentobarbital, a sedative used in executions.
Witnesses present at the event reported that Pike appeared to be choking and struggling for approximately one hour after the initial injection was administered. When the second dose also failed to result in death, medical personnel transported her to a hospital, where she was placed on life support due to her critical state.
So she is awake now? Does this mean legal challenges to reverse her sentence will definitely succeed?
I had no idea she survived two doses. The details about her choking for an hour are truly disturbing.
This is absolutely horrifying. A botched execution leaves everyone questioning the morality of the death penalty entirely.
