China Reduces US Treasury Holdings to Decade Low

Beijing has reduced its portfolio of United States government debt to its smallest share in nearly two decades, marking a significant shift in the financial relationship between the world’s two largest economies. According to data reported by the Financial Times, the reduction brings China’s Treasury holdings down to levels not seen since the height of the global financial crisis in 2008.

This decline reflects a broader strategic trend where China has been gradually diversifying its foreign exchange reserves away from US dollars. The move comes amid ongoing trade tensions and geopolitical friction between Washington and Beijing, which have encouraged Chinese authorities to seek alternative investments and reduce exposure to American financial instruments.

Analysts note that while the reduction is substantial, China remains one of the largest foreign holders of US debt. However, the downward trajectory signals a long-term recalibration of China’s reserve management strategy, as it seeks to insulate its economy from potential financial sanctions and currency volatility linked to the United States.
