Doha and Beijing have announced a strategic milestone in their bilateral relationship, describing the next decade as a “golden era” of cooperation. The announcement follows a two-day visit by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to China, during which the two nations agreed to expand collaboration across energy, investment, and advanced technology sectors.
Beijing has formally designated Qatar as an “important strategic partner” in the Middle East and Gulf regions. However, analysts note that the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran and Doha’s ongoing mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington were central themes of the discussions.
Ibrahim bin Sultan al-Hashmi, director of the Department of Media and Communications at Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, emphasized Doha’s frustration with the current status quo. “It’s not acceptable at all to have this state of no war and no peace,” al-Hashmi told reporters in Doha. “Qatar is working hard with its partners, including China. Diplomatic efforts are being exerted and new ideas are being discussed.”
A golden decade sounds nice on paper. Let us see if these agreements translate into tangible results for ordinary citizens.
Energy ties make sense, but I am skeptical about advanced technology transfers. Washington will not be happy about this.
