China is making significant strides in its Tianwen 3 mission, which aims to retrieve approximately 500 grams of Martian material and deliver it to Earth by 2031. According to the China National Space Administration, the complex operation involves a lander, ascender, service capsule, orbiter, and an Earth reentry module. If timelines remain accurate, the mission will lift off in 2028 from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province, utilizing two Long March 5 heavy-lift rockets.
Hou Zengqian, the chief scientist behind the project, informed state broadcaster CCTV that the mission is advancing smoothly despite intensified efforts to resolve technical hurdles. He noted that probe equipment has moved into prototype development and that scientific teams across the nation are collaborating to meet the mission’s objectives.
The progress has drawn comparisons to historical space race milestones. Scott Hubbard, former NASA “Mars Czar” and former director of NASA’s Ames Research Center, described the reported advancements as a “Sputnik moment.” Speaking to Space.com, Hubbard suggested that China could dominate headlines and potentially become the first nation to detect evidence of extraterrestrial life.
Finding signs of microbial life is the primary scientific driver for Tianwen 3. Hou explained to Xinhua news agency that researchers are seeking traces similar to early Earth life, while also remaining open to unknown biological forms that may have arisen through Mars’ unique evolutionary path. During the 2026 International Deep Space Exploration Conference in Hefei, Anhui province, Hou emphasized that this search for potential biosignatures is the mission’s top priority.
China plans to finalize its landing site selection by the end of 2026. Specialists are currently developing a next-generation geological map of the entire planet to aid in choosing locations based on geological age, water activity history, habitability potential, and the likelihood of preserving biosignatures. The targeted launch window falls between December 2028 and January 2029, occurring roughly every 26 months alongside other Mars mission opportunities.
To support the ambitious return, a new planetary protection laboratory is being established in Hefei’s Deep-Space Science City. According to reports from the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory (DSEL), the facility will manage sterilization, unsealing, and processing of incoming samples while assessing biological risks. Li Hang, DSEL’s development planning department director, stated that China will adhere to Committee on Space Research policies to prevent forward contamination of Mars and backward contamination of Earth.
Hou acknowledged that sample return is an extremely intricate undertaking, with key challenges including landing-site selection, planetary protection, and the identification of life signs. However, he maintained that regardless of whether biological evidence is discovered, the returned samples will hold irreplaceable scientific value. Detailed analyses at microscopic, molecular, and isotopic levels could profoundly enhance understanding of Martian geology, environmental evolution, and the conditions necessary for life to originate.
I just hope they pick the right landing site. Hitting a zone with ancient water activity is crucial for finding those biosignatures they’re chasing.
