Following a hiatus of nearly one month, states have regained the ability to order this season’s COVID-19 vaccines through a federal initiative designed to provide complimentary immunizations to low-income children, according to the US health department.
The pause has drawn scrutiny, with Trump administration officials failing to offer a transparent rationale for the holdover. This lack of clarity has fueled speculation regarding potential interference from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been associated with anti-vaccine sentiments.
On Wednesday, Ars Technica noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had not yet activated ordering for the 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccines via the Vaccines for Children program, despite the Food and Drug Administration granting approval in late August.
In response to inquiries, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) stated that the CDC had not yet concluded its procurement decisions. The department’s comment implied that officials were re-evaluating the necessity of administering these vaccines to pediatric populations. “HHS and CDC are committed to responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources and to ensuring that vaccines purchased through federally funded programs are appropriate for the populations those programs serve,” the statement read.
