Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has strongly criticized the term “nepo baby,” describing it as a “horrific” label used to dismiss the achievements of children born to famous parents. Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 56-year-old star argued that these individuals did not choose their circumstances and are diligently carving out their own paths in the industry.
The term generally refers to offspring of well-known figures who are perceived to have secured wealth and success primarily through familial connections rather than merit. Zeta-Jones, who is married to actor Michael Douglas, has two children in showbiz: Dylan, who is pursuing acting, and Carys, who is interested in directing. She noted that both are working hard to establish themselves.
“You have to go with your dreams, your passion,” Zeta-Jones said. “It’s hard for them to forge a way forward on their own. This horrific phrase ‘nepo baby’ is horrible because these kids didn’t ask to be born into this; they’re finding their own way in life.”
She added that despite their backgrounds, her children are talented and enthusiastic about their work. “But they love it, and they’re good. Otherwise, Michael and I would be the first to say, ‘you know what? Maybe law school looks really good.'”
Zeta-Jones herself rose to prominence after landing a role in the West End production of 42nd Street in 1987. She became a household name in the UK in 1991 following her starring role in the ITV series The Darling Buds Of May alongside David Jason. Her international stardom was cemented by roles in films such as The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment, Traffic, and the 2002 musical Chicago.
Reflecting on her own start, she recalled being captivated by theatre at a young age and knowing she wanted to pursue a performing career rather than continuing with traditional education in Swansea.
She met her husband, Michael Douglas, at the Deauville Film Festival in France in August 1998. The couple, who have a 25-year age gap, became engaged the following year and married at The Plaza Hotel in New York in 2000. Their son Dylan was born in 2000, followed by their daughter Carys in 2003.
Calling it horrific feels a bit dramatic for what is essentially just a descriptive term. Maybe they need thicker skin?
