Canada is preparing to levy retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars worth of American imports beginning early Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing trade conflict with its largest trading partner. The move follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, intensifying tensions between him and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Effective at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, the counter-measures will impose duties ranging from 15% to 50%. These measures target approximately C$27.6bn (roughly $20.4bn) in imports from the United States.
The tariffs are designed to hit sectors that have been most heavily impacted by US trade policies, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. By targeting these specific industries, Canada aims to apply direct economic pressure in response to what it describes as unfair trade practices.
Twenty billion dollars in tariffs? This is going to get ugly fast. My grocery bill is already worrying enough.
I had no idea the retaliatory basket was that targeted. Steel and dairy specifically feels like a strategic punch.
This escalation will hurt consumers on both sides. Hopefully common sense prevails before prices skyrocket further.
