Canada has officially enacted $27.6 billion in retaliatory tariffs on American goods, marking a significant escalation in the trade dispute between the two North American neighbors. The new duties, which took effect on Tuesday, follow the collapse of trade negotiations last month and signal a deepening rift between Washington and Ottawa.
According to Canada’s Department of Finance, the measures are designed to protect domestic workers, producers, and manufacturers by leveling the playing field against U.S. products. Officials described the move as a “dollar for dollar” response to Section 338 tariffs imposed by the United States earlier this year.
The tariff structure targets a broad range of imports, including dairy products, agricultural machinery, paper, household appliances, and electronics. Rates range from 15% to 50%, with the highest levies applied to U.S. steel, aluminum, and iron products, as well as furniture and clothing. The 50% duty on metals effectively doubles the previous rate.
Existing counter-tariffs, including the 25% levy on the politically sensitive automotive sector, remain in place. The trade in dispute is substantial: the U.S. exported $333.6 billion in goods to Canada and imported $381.9 billion from its northern neighbor in recent figures, covering sectors such as energy, vehicles, heavy machinery, aircraft, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods.
Diplomatic tensions have spiked alongside the economic penalties. With talks failing in late August, officials from both nations have engaged in public recriminations, blaming each other for the inability to reach an agreement.
Adding to the friction, U.S. President Donald Trump called for a boycott of Canadian aerospace manufacturer Bombardier on Monday via his Truth Social platform, stating, “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!”
The situation underscores the fragility of the trade relationship between the historically close allies, as both sides appear entrenched in a tit-for-tat trade war that threatens to disrupt supply chains and increase costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.
