Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has declared that he is focusing on the current Ligue 1 campaign following the collapse of his proposed £47.1 million transfer to Chelsea. The 22-year-old Senegal international had successfully completed a medical ahead of the deal, but the move unraveled just before the close of the transfer window.
The path to the transfer had been rocky from the start. Monaco initially rejected two bids for the player before lowering their asking price during a chaotic period at the end of the window. At that time, it appeared a potential swap deal involving Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton might be in jeopardy.
However, once Balogun’s switch to Everton seemed to revive, Monaco changed its stance regarding the sale of Camara. In the end, neither player departed the club, leaving both to remain with the French side.
Speaking to the press ahead of Monaco’s match against Strasbourg, Camara addressed the sudden change of events. “There was a possibility I could leave,” he acknowledged. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”
Reports from France indicated that Monaco were under pressure to complete a significant sale during the summer window, with a preference for offloading Balogun. A club source had previously stressed that securing Camara’s departure would require a “substantial fee.”
Camara’s decision to look forward comes as Monaco enjoy a strong start to the season. The team has won their first three Ligue 1 fixtures and currently sits in second place in the table, trailing leaders Rennes by a game in hand.
“I can help the team a lot,” the midfielder said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”
