Callie Khouri bets on second wind with Thelma & Louise musical

Callie Khouri, the acclaimed screenwriter behind the Oscar-winning debut Thelma & Louise, is turning her attention to musical theatre with a new stage adaptation of the iconic 1991 film. At 68, the writer and producer reflects on her career longevity and the unique challenges of translating a gritty road movie into a live performance.

Khouri describes herself as having “a world-class case of beginner’s luck,” noting that her first feature screenplay earned an Academy Award and her initial television series, Nashville, enjoyed a successful six-season run. Now, she is eager to see if she can maintain this momentum. “I hope that this is not the end of that streak,” she said, joking that she hopes not to “hit a wall here and slide down it like Wile E Coyote.” 

The concept of a musical based on Thelma & Louise was initially met with skepticism, even by Khouri herself. The film, which stars Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, and a young Brad Pitt, tackles heavy themes including domestic abuse, attempted rape, murder, and suicide. “My agent said, ‘There’s a guy who wants to meet you to talk about doing Thelma as a stage musical,'” Khouri recalled. “And I just thought, ‘Well, that’s nuts!'” She had previously turned down similar proposals.

However, the project eventually gained traction, particularly after legendary producer Sonia Friedman joined the team. After a decade in development, the musical has finally premiered at London’s Young Vic, featuring Rachel Tucker and Amy Lennox in the lead roles.

The adaptation focuses on the film’s underlying message of female empowerment and the strength of friendship, aspects that continue to resonate with audiences decades later. Khouri’s involvement ensures that the core spirit of the original screenplay is preserved as the story moves from the silver screen to the stage.
