Shares in the dating application company Bumble climbed by almost 50% on Monday following reports that the firm is engaged in advanced discussions regarding a potential acquisition valued at roughly $1 billion (£757m).
According to the Wall Street Journal, technology holding company Ithaca may formally announce a deal to purchase the Texas-headquartered business as early as this week. The significant rally in Bumble’s share price has elevated its market valuation to over $580 million.
Despite this increase, the current valuation remains substantially lower than the more than $14 billion peak recorded when the company listed on the Nasdaq in 2021.
Bumble, one of the most frequently downloaded dating applications globally, operates in a highly competitive sector where expansion has decelerated. The BBC has reached out to both Bumble and Ithaca for official comment.
Founded in 2014 by Whitney Wolfe Herd, who also co-founded Tinder, Bumble originally distinguished itself with a policy requiring women to initiate conversations after a match. However, the company recently discontinued this feature, sparking controversy among users who felt it diluted the app’s unique identity.
The potential sale comes amidst broader challenges for the industry. Dating platforms have faced increasing pressure as younger demographics express dissatisfaction with online dating experiences. Additionally, Match Group, which operates competitors such as Tinder, OkCupid, and Hinge, has seen its own share value drop sharply from its 2021 highs.
This doesn’t surprise me. The whole industry is struggling to keep Gen Z engaged. Maybe it’s time to swipe left on apps altogether?
Does anyone actually remember what made Bumble special? They got rid of the women-message-first rule, so I guess they’re just another generic app now.
It’s actually kind of sad seeing the stock drop from $14 billion to a $1 billion buyout. The dating app golden age is definitely over.
Is anyone else suspicious about Ithaca being a holding company? Seems like a shell waiting to package and flip Bumble again.
Wow, fifty percent in one day? I sold my shares years ago, clearly I missed the boat on this one.
