Budget External Audio Is the Best Way to Achieve Dolby Atmos on Modern TVs

Contemporary television designs have prioritized slim profiles, compelling manufacturers to position speakers to face downward or toward the rear. Consequently, sound is often absorbed by the wall, media console, or floor before it reaches the viewer. Because modern sets are rarely thicker than a smartphone, they simply cannot accommodate the high-quality drivers or resonance cabinets required to deliver dynamic, immersive audio.

This design constraint significantly hampers the ability to reproduce the height channels and depth necessary for true spatial audio experiences. The result is often flat acoustics, indistinct dialogue, and weak bass response. This issue is particularly pronounced for users who stream music through their televisions, as the lack of clarity can distort vocals and make music sound unbalanced.

Even high-end televisions equipped with internal Dolby Atmos processing frequently struggle to project audio effectively into a living space. Without dedicated upward-firing or side-firing drivers, dimensional sound cues tend to scatter incorrectly, causing many of the intended audio effects to be lost rather than experienced as designed.
