A British national has died following a climbing accident on Torrecerredo, the highest summit in the Cantabrian Mountains located in northern Spain. The 28-year-old mountaineer fell approximately 61 metres (200ft) while descending from the peak on Thursday afternoon, local authorities confirmed.
According to the Spanish Civil Guard for the Asturias region, the climber plummeted down a vertical gully on the mountain’s east side. Rescue teams located and recovered his body at a position roughly 20 metres below the summit.
I climbed Torrecerredo last year and that east gully looked terrifyingly exposed. How could anyone have fallen like this?
My heart breaks for such a young climber. The Cantabrian range is beautiful but brutally unforgiving in bad weather.
