South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the one-day international series against Australia after Matthew Breetzke scored a brilliant century in Durban on Thursday. The hosts posted a competitive 297-8 from their 50 overs, setting Australia a target they ultimately failed to reach.
Breetzke, who bats at number four, anchored the innings with 112 runs off 106 deliveries, leveraging his strong ODI record which sees him average over 60 in 15 matches. He found solid support from Marco Jansen, who struck a career-best 75 from 59 balls, helping South Africa build a formidable total.
Australia came into their chase with momentum, thanks to an explosive start from captain Mitch Marsh. Marsh played a brisk 60 off just 36 balls and shared a 90-run opening stand in under ten overs with Travis Head, who contributed 36 from 37 deliveries.
However, the Australian batting lineup faltered significantly as the middle order failed to convert starts into substantial scores. The turning point arrived when Jansen produced a spectacular diving, one-handed catch to remove Matt Renshaw for 44, leaving Australia stranded at 215-7. The tourists went on to lose their final nine wickets for just 101 runs, finishing all out for 230 and falling short by 67 runs.
South African spinners Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin restricted the Australians effectively, with Maharaj taking 4-20 in 9.2 overs and Fortuin claiming 2-34 in eight frames.
Australia captain Mitch Marsh expressed frustration with the team’s performance. “I’m pretty disappointed,” Marsh said. “South Africa outplayed us. It was a good game of cricket but we fell well short.” He added, “We had our opportunities, but we weren’t able to form many partnerships tonight.”
South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma praised his side’s resilience. “Very satisfied, all round it was a good fight from the batters and bowlers,” Bavuma said. “We were under pressure in the first 10 overs in each, but we managed to get a very competitive score on that wicket.”
The series now shifts to Johannesburg for the second match on Sunday, where Australia are expected to welcome back captain Pat Cummins. The upcoming games serve as crucial preparation for both sides ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted across South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
