Bolsonaro and Lula Advance to Brazil Runoff After Tight Election

Flavio Bolsonaro and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have been selected for the runoff election in Brazil after the recent presidential vote ended in a deadlock. With more than 99% of ballots tallied, Flavio Bolsonaro held a slight edge at 47.2%, while the incumbent leftist president collected 45%, according to the electoral court. Since no candidate achieved an outright majority, a second round of voting is now mandatory.

Bolsonaro, the populist senator from Rio de Janeiro, is running to carry forward the right-wing movement established by his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro. Lula, 80, is attempting to secure a fourth non-consecutive term leading the Workers’ Party. As results came in, the senator monitored the count in Brasilia, while Lula observed from Sao Paulo. Due to the nation’s electronic voting systems, final tallies were anticipated within hours of the polls closing.

The campaign concluded on Saturday with both candidates making their final appeals in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s economic hub. Lula addressed approximately 150,000 supporters, promising to “defeat the far right” and continuing his platform focused on welfare programs, income redistribution, and state-funded development. He framed the election as a choice between strengthening democracy and embracing barbarism.

Conversely, Flavio Bolsonaro led a motorcycle procession through the countryside towns of Santa Barbara d’Oeste and Americana, displaying a portrait of his father to crowds chanting “mito” (legend). The 45-year-old senator has centered his campaign on hardline security measures and tax reductions, criticizing the cost of living under Lula’s administration. He stated that Brazil requires change to address high taxes and violence against women.

Experts suggest the political tide may be turning. Fabio de Sa e Silva, a Brazilian studies professor at the University of Oklahoma, noted that while Lula retains a mathematical chance, momentum currently favors the right. He emphasized that the significant gain by far-right parties in Congress could make governing difficult for Lula, regardless of the election outcome.

Tensions are further complicated by the legal situation of Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year sentence for his role in a 2022 coup attempt. Flavio Bolsonaro has pledged to pardon his father if elected. The elder Bolsonaro’s ties to US President Donald Trump, who recently imposed tariffs on Brazilian goods, have drawn scrutiny, with Lula’s camp characterizing the Bolsonaro movement as a threat to national sovereignty.

Recent polling by research firm Quaest, cited by Reuters, indicated Lula at 46% and Bolsonaro at 45% in the first round. In simulated runoff scenarios, Bolsonaro leads slightly at 44% to Lula’s 42%. This follows the 2022 contest where Lula defeated Jair Bolsonaro by a mere 1.8 percentage points. Meanwhile, Flavio Bolsonaro faces ongoing investigations regarding alleged corruption and tax evasion linked to the financing of a biopic about his father, charges he denies.

  1. Wild that Flavio is running on his father’s legacy while facing his own corruption probes. The biopic scandal alone makes this campaign a total circus. Good luck to everyone involved.

  2. This feels exactly like 2022 all over again. Two exhausted candidates and a deeply polarized country. I just hope the runoff doesn’t escalate the rhetoric further.
