Bitcoin has climbed to its highest valuation since January, touching $85,000, as the cryptocurrency market continues to rally despite recent legislative setbacks in Washington. The surge comes amid growing speculation that the prolonged “crypto winter” may finally be ending.
The price appreciation occurred even as the U.S. Senate blocked the Clarity Act last week. The proposed legislation would have established a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States, splitting oversight responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
While existing pro-regulation measures, such as the Genius Act passed last year, have provided support for crypto prices, some experts argue that the failure of the Clarity Act could paradoxically benefit the market. According to Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, the absence of new legislation leaves rule-making authority with agencies that are currently exhibiting favorable stances toward digital assets.
“It’s the most pro-crypto SEC in the history of the U.S.; it’s the most pro-crypto CFTC in the history of the U.S. So ironically, in the absence of Clarity passing, we may actually have stronger pro-crypto regulation,” Hougan said.
Market dynamics also appear to be shifting as investor capital rotates back into the crypto sector. Hougan noted that the recent boom in artificial intelligence stocks had previously dominated investor attention. “The AI boom had ‘sucked all the oxygen out of the room,'” he explained. “Any investor who was a momentum-driven investor was focused on that. Now that that has sort of levelled off, you’re seeing that money rotate back into crypto.”
Does anyone else miss the days when regulation provided actual clarity? Guess we just have to trade the uncertainty.
Wait, the SEC is actually pro-crypto now? That’s a plot twist I definitely did not see coming last year.
The rotation from AI stocks makes total sense. Capital always seeks the next hot opportunity when momentum shifts.
Is $85k sustainable though? I feel like we’re just repeating the same cycle without real fundamental value backing it.
I never thought I’d say this, but maybe unclear rules are better than bad ones. The market seems to agree.
