In January 2025, a devastating wildfire swept through the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, destroying over 5,000 residences. Among the lost properties was the longtime home of actor and comedian Billy Crystal, which was completely consumed by the flames.
Despite the profound personal loss, Crystal has transformed the experience into his latest theatrical production, titled “860.” The one-man stage show draws direct inspiration from the ruins of his former family home, reflecting on both what was lost and the lessons learned during the recovery process.
Crystal recently spoke with CBS News correspondent Tracy Smith about the journey of bringing this deeply personal story to Broadway, discussing the emotional challenge of sharing his loss with audiences while finding humor and meaning in the darkest of times.

Can’t wait to see how he balances the grief with his signature humor. Billy Crystal always finds the light.
I didn’t realize the Palisades fires were that destructive in January. Hope the show brings him some peace.
This is incredibly brave. Turning such personal tragedy into art is a powerful way to heal and help others.
