Marco Bezzecchi secured victory at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Sunday, while his teammate Jorge Martin claimed third place to reclaim the lead in the MotoGP world championship from reigning champion Marc Marquez.
Riding for the factory Aprilia team, Bezzecchi executed a decisive overtake on pole-sitter Raul Fernandez with nine laps remaining at the hot and humid Mandalika International Circuit.
Fernandez held on for second place, completing a 1-2 finish for Aprilia alongside Bezzecchi. Martin rounded out the podium, also riding for Aprilia.
The result marked a significant shift in the championship landscape. Marquez, who leads the Ducati squad, finished sixth after losing the points lead he had taken earlier in the weekend by winning the Saturday sprint race. He is now trailing Bezzecchi in third, with Martin back at the summit.
The race was complicated by prior incidents between Fernandez and Bezzecchi. The two had collided and crashed during the sprint, resulting in a fractured index finger for the Spaniard, which required him to brake using only his middle finger throughout the feature race.
Despite the physical adversity, Fernandez started strongly, leading from the front and initially distancing himself from the chasing pack. However, as the laps wore on, Bezzecchi began to close the gap. He made his move on lap 19 and was able to establish a comfortable margin over his rival.
The third-place finish elevates Martin to 355 points at the top of the standings. Marquez sits in second place with 353 points, one behind, while Bezzecchi is third on 309 points.
With five Grands Prix remaining in the 2026 season, the championship battle is set to intensify. The next round is scheduled to take place in two weeks at Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix.
Fascinating detail about Fernandez racing on one finger. Reminds me of Rossi’s resilience in 2005. MotoGP athletes are truly tough competitors.
Wait, Marquez lost the lead after winning the sprint? That makes zero sense tactically. Seems like a bizarre strategy call by Ducati.
Aprilia’s 1-2 finish is stunning. Bezzecchi handling that finger injury rivalry with such grace really shows his class as a champion.
