Bettina Anderson, wife of Donald Trump Jr., addressed reports on Monday that Russian billionaire Umar Kremlev hosted post-wedding celebrations for the couple on a private Bahamian island, describing the lavish events as an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift.” Her statement followed the release of a ProPublica investigation revealing that the Russian oligarch, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, secretly funded part of the wedding festivities.
In an Instagram post, Anderson emphasized that the actual wedding ceremony was an intimate gathering reserved for family members only. She noted that President Trump did not attend due to his duties in Washington. According to Anderson, the subsequent weekend in the Bahamas had been planned well ahead of time as a social gathering with friends, rather than as part of the wedding itself.
“When our original wedding plans changed, we simply decided to get married before it and arrived at an already planned weekend as newlyweds,” Anderson wrote. She described Kremlev, who serves as secretary general of the International Boxing Federation, as a “dear friend” and stated that he generously hosted two nights of celebrations after the couple’s nuptials.
Anderson rejected suggestions that the association was politically motivated. “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive,” she said, adding, “We are fortunate to have wonderful friends from all over the world, and we will never be embarrassed or apologetic about being grateful for them.” She explicitly denied the existence of any conspiracy.
It remains unclear how the couple became acquainted with Kremlev. A spokesperson for the Russian businessman told ProPublica that he and Donald Trump Jr. first met “a couple of years ago” and maintain a friendly relationship. The statement insisted that Kremlev “has never discussed political matters with any of his American friends and acquaintances.”
CBS News has contacted the Trump Organization for comment regarding why Donald Trump Jr., who serves as executive vice president of the company, accepted the gift. Forbes estimates the younger Trump’s net worth at approximately $300 million.
I still don’t get how they met. That gap in the story is bothering me more than the wedding itself.
Friendship doesn’t need a motive? Really, Bettina? This feels like damage control that falls flat.
