U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders delivered a sharp critique of congressional inaction on artificial intelligence during an address at the Pro-Human Assembly in Washington on Tuesday. The Vermont independent argued that lawmakers have been “asleep at the wheel” as the technology rapidly evolves, calling for urgent policy intervention.
Sanders cautioned attendees that the current iteration of AI represents merely “the least capable version of AI that we will ever have,” signaling his concern over the trajectory of the technology and its potential societal impacts.
The senator was joined on stage by several prominent critics of AI advancement, including former Trump advisor Steve Bannon. Together, they highlighted the risks associated with unchecked technological growth and called for greater regulatory oversight to protect democratic institutions and individual rights.
