Global temperatures soared to unprecedented levels this summer, with August officially recorded as the hottest month ever documented. In the United States, the seasonal heat also shattered records, reinforcing the accelerating pace of climate change.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the period from June through August marked the warmest summer for the contiguous 48 states since record-keeping began 132 years ago. Globally, Copernicus Climate Change Service data shows August tied with July 2023 for the hottest month on record.
Data from Copernicus indicates that global temperatures in August averaged 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit, exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels. This surpasses a critical climate threshold established by international agreements in 2015.
Francisca Guglielmo, a senior scientist at Copernicus, acknowledged that while the data is alarming, it reflects a long-observed trend rather than an isolated incident. “Every record is always shocking in a way, but the numbers are not a surprise,” Guglielmo said. She emphasized that immediate measures are necessary to mitigate the escalating effects of global warming.
In the United States, August averaged 75.6 degrees Fahrenheit across the Lower 48, making it the warmest August on record. Daytime high temperatures also set a new benchmark, averaging 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, drought conditions persisted throughout much of the country, affecting nearly 60% of the U.S. during the summer months.
Scientists attribute these extreme temperatures primarily to human-induced climate change. Alexander Gershunov, a research meteorologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, noted that the heat is a global phenomenon rather than a regional anomaly. “What we’re feeling is not some regional heat anomaly, but a hotter climate all over the globe,” Gershunov said. “We’re not the only ones who are feeling it: ask the Europeans, the Japanese, everybody is feeling the heat this summer.”
The consequences of these rising temperatures are multifaceted, including increased energy demand for cooling, intensified droughts, warmer ocean surfaces, and heightened wildfire risks. El Niño conditions also began to develop, contributing to record-high sea surface temperatures across the Pacific Ocean.
Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, warned that such extreme heat events will become increasingly common. “We’re just going to continue to hear about record-breaking heat, record-shattering heat over and over and over again,” Swain said. “We’re going to become a little bit numb to it — maybe already have.”
