According to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, August 2026 has tied with July 2023 for the hottest month on record. The unprecedented temperatures were propelled by the compounding effects of human-caused climate change and a strengthening El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean.
Data reveals that global average temperatures in August were 1.65C above pre-industrial baselines, temporarily surpassing the critical 1.5C threshold established under international climate agreements. While exceeding this benchmark for a single month does not constitute a permanent breach, scientists warn it underscores a clear trajectory toward breaching the limit.
Dr. Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at Copernicus, described the period as “a remarkable month in the global climate record,” noting that the impacts are increasingly felt across communities, economies, and ecosystems worldwide. She emphasized that the simultaneous occurrence of record air temperatures and ocean heat demonstrates how climate change is now driving extremes throughout both the atmosphere and the oceans.
The extreme heat also capped the warmest summer on record for Western Europe, overtaking the deadly 2003 heatwave. In the UK, summer 2026 marked the hottest season since records began in 1884. Researchers at the Met Office estimate that such temperatures are now approximately 130 times more likely due to human-induced climate change.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell stated that the records provide irrefutable evidence of humanity’s impact on the planet. “This is the spiralling price of humanity’s fossil fuel addiction, and the global climate crisis it is fuelling,” Stiell said.
Scientists point to the current El Niño, a natural climate pattern characterized by unusually warm waters in the eastern Pacific, as an additional driver. The phenomenon releases vast amounts of stored ocean heat into the atmosphere, nudging global temperatures upward for roughly a year. Copernicus researchers indicate the current event is still intensifying and could become one of the most powerful on record, with peak impacts expected over the coming year.
The consequences of these climatic shifts are already being felt globally. In the Philippines, powerful storms and flooding associated with El Niño have displaced tens of thousands of people. Meanwhile, in Europe, the relentless heat disrupted education, strained healthcare systems, triggered droughts and wildfires, and affected food production.
Dr. Clair Barnes, an extreme weather researcher at Imperial College London, highlighted the severe human cost of these events, which she estimates claims tens of thousands of lives. She rejected the notion that such summers represent a static “new normal.” Instead, she warned that as long as fossil fuels continue to be burned, records will keep falling and extremes will worsen faster than adaptation efforts can manage.
The UK’s hottest summer since 1884 is staggering. It’s time we stopped calling this the new normal and started treating it as an emergency.
