Officials confirmed on Thursday that at least 48 individuals have lost their lives and approximately 100 are undergoing medical care in southern Nigeria following the consumption of a locally produced alcoholic beverage believed to contain methanol. The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of homebrewed drinks, which remain widely consumed in rural communities due to their lower cost and limited regulatory oversight.
Banji Ajaka, the Commissioner for Health in Ondo State, reported that the casualties were identified across the Odigbo and Irele local government areas. According to Ajaka, a total of 182 people are believed to have been affected by the toxic substance, with hospital treatment currently underway for numerous victims.
Another tragic reminder of why unregulated homebrew remains such a deadly gamble in rural communities. It happens far too often.
