Art of Play Defends Itself After Kelly Clarkson’s Viral Complaint

Following a widely circulated social media post by singer Kelly Clarkson, a Brooklyn-based novelty retailer has issued a response regarding her negative shopping experience. Clarkson recently took to X to share her frustration after visiting Art of Play, stating she felt judged and compared her treatment to that of Julia Roberts’ character in the film “Pretty Woman.”

In her post, which has accumulated approximately 260,000 likes and over 32 million views, Clarkson described driving to the store with intentions to make a purchase. She claimed staff members glanced at her disapprovingly and suggested they could locate a cheaper alternative, a moment she found offensive. She urged her followers to avoid the establishment if they disliked being treated poorly.

On Sunday, Art of Play addressed the situation through a multi-slide carousel on Instagram. The business clarified that the specific item Clarkson had inquired about—an animatronic singing and dancing bird named Molly—is a permanent exhibit used in their magic shows and is not for sale. Staff explained that Molly is affixed to the wall and features a “Do Not Touch” sign, having served as the store’s mascot since at least February 2025.

The retailer also acknowledged the intense backlash they have faced online, noting that millions of people who had never visited the shop seemed to join in the criticism. In their statement, Art of Play emphasized their inclusive policy, welcoming all customers whether they intend to buy items or simply browse their puzzles and games. They concluded by quoting Clarkson’s lyrics, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” and expressed hope that the misunderstanding could be resolved directly with the singer in the future.

  1. Does anyone else find it hilarious that the bird has been there since February 2025? That thing is basically part of the furniture by now.

  2. Wait, they keep quotes from her own songs now? ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is such a perfect closer to this whole saga.

  3. Actually, I went there last week and the staff was super nice. Sometimes people just have a bad day and project it onto strangers.

  4. This is wild. How does someone think a wall-mounted animatronic is a purchasable product? The entitlement is staggering.

  5. I watched the video twice. Clearly, she wanted a free item from a display she wasn’t allowed to touch. Not my first choice for a celebrity.
