Apple’s Laptop Color Drought: Why Pink Is Restricted to the MacBook Neo

Apple’s Laptop Color Drought: Why Pink Is Restricted to the MacBook Neo

The search for a vibrant pink MacBook has left consumers with a single option: the MacBook Neo. Dubbed “Blush” by Apple, this rosy shade has found a receptive audience on social media, particularly among students. However, the Neo is positioned as an entry-level device designed for casual use and note-taking, lacking the processing power required for professional creative workflows.

This scarcity highlights a broader trend at Apple, which has largely abandoned colorful finishes for its premium tier. After quietly retiring Rose Gold across its lineup—which had appeared on iPhones, MacBook Airs discontinued in 2019, and the recently phased-out Apple Watch—Apple has steered its higher-end models toward subdued palettes. While the MacBook Air offers a faint blue variant, buyers looking for the power of a MacBook Pro are restricted to traditional Silver and Space Black.

The contrast is stark when compared to Apple’s mobile and desktop offerings. The iPhone 16 and 17e feature distinct pink shades, and the base-model iPad with the A16 chip comes in a bold pink that matches its vibrant yellow option. Similarly, the M4 iMac is available in several eye-catching colors, including pink. Moving up to the iPad Pro or MacBook Pro, however, returns users to muted tones and grays.

Competitors are leaning into bold aesthetics, with Google’s Pixel 11 offering a striking “Hibiscus” hot pink and the new Motorola Razr honoring its heritage with a Hot Pink foldable design. Apple has shown it can produce vivid colors, evidenced by the saturated orange on the iPhone 17 Pro and the burgundy and glacier blue options on the iPhone 18 Pro. With rumors suggesting a redesign of the MacBook Pro range, industry observers are hopeful that Apple will finally bring more color to its most powerful laptops.

  1. I’m still here for the MacBook Air blue though. Maybe Neo’s success will force Apple’s hand on Pro colors soon?

  2. Finally, color where it counts. Apple needs to realize professionals also want personality in their tools.
