Apple Watch Ultra 4 Review: Four Key Upgrades Worth Considering

Apple officially unveiled the rugged Apple Watch Ultra 4 last Wednesday, and following days of hands-on testing, key improvements have emerged that may influence purchasing decisions. While new features like the Readiness app, Audio Intelligence, and an enhanced Siri are available across both the Ultra 4 and the Series 12, the Ultra model offers distinct advantages for users seeking durability and extended outdoor performance.

For individuals with smaller wrists or those who do not engage in extreme sports or satellite communication, the standard Series 12 may be a more suitable choice. However, for users who require a robust device capable of withstanding intense conditions, the Ultra 4 delivers significant upgrades worth evaluating.

The first major improvement is battery longevity. Thanks to the new S11 chip and software optimizations, the Ultra 4 provides 50 hours of use with the always-on display enabled, representing an eight-hour increase over its predecessor. This enhancement ensures users can rely on the watch for longer adventures without frequent recharging.

Health tracking has also seen a substantial overhaul with the introduction of the Health Sensing System, a feature absent in the Ultra 3. Heart rate measurements now occur every five seconds, down from every five minutes, while heart rate variability readings have increased from every two to four hours to every five minutes. This denser data collection powers new metrics such as the Readiness score, Health Age, and daytime and nighttime Vitals. In independent testing against a Polar H10 chest strap, the Ultra 4 demonstrated a .998 correlation rate, marking it as one of the most accurate wrist-worn heart rate monitors available.

Charging speed has been improved alongside capacity. The Ultra 4 can deliver up to 18 hours of battery life from just 15 minutes of charging, adding convenience for users who need a quick power boost between activities.

Additionally, Apple claims the Ultra 4 features the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch. While full verification requires more extensive testing, the improved satellite positioning is expected to benefit runners, hikers, and other outdoor athletes who demand precise route tracking.

For current Ultra 3 owners, upgrading is advisable primarily if they wish to access the new Health Sensing System and detailed cardiac insights. At a price point of $799, the decision should weigh the value of advanced health metrics and battery improvements against the functionality of the existing device. Those who prefer larger displays and comprehensive fitness tracking may find the Ultra 4 a compelling upgrade over the Series 12, particularly if they prioritize ruggedness and GPS accuracy.
