Apple’s anticipated expansion into the smart home market may include a unique security camera that eschews traditional video recording in favor of text-based event summaries. According to Mark Gurman, speaking on the inaugural episode of the Power On podcast, the device is part of a broader Apple smart home ecosystem that also features a rumored smart home hub.
Gurman identified the project by the internal code name J450, describing it as both an offshoot and a companion to the J490 smart home display. The low-profile cameras are designed to be placed throughout a residence and focus on delivering descriptive text of events rather than visual footage, representing a distinct approach among the first-party and third-party home security products Apple is currently developing.
