A federal jury in San Diego has ordered Apple to pay Taction more than $5.7 billion in damages, concluding a patent infringement lawsuit filed by the haptics company in 2021.
The legal dispute centered on two specific U.S. patents—Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117—which cover vibration-based, tactile transducer technology designed to allow users to feel device feedback in response to their inputs. According to reports from CNBC, Taction alleged that Apple utilized this patented technology within its Taptic Engine, found in iPhones and Apple Watches, without securing a proper license.
After reviewing the case, the jury determined that Apple had indeed infringed upon the patents. The verdict found violations involving two claims from one patent and one claim from the other. Taction had argued that the technology powering the haptic responses in Apple’s products was derived from its own innovations, a claim the jury accepted.
