Apple Develops Privacy-First Smart Camera That Captures No Video

According to recent reports, Apple is developing a new smart home security camera designed to analyze household activity through artificial intelligence rather than capturing traditional video footage. This strategic move comes as the tech giant focuses on expanding its Siri-led smart home ecosystem, following enhancements made to the virtual assistant in recent operating system updates.

Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple insider, disclosed in his Power On podcast that the company may introduce a long-awaited home hub later this October. He further predicted that a companion security camera would also be released, distinguishing itself from competitors by omitting video recording capabilities entirely.

Gurman, citing Bloomberg, described the device as cylindrical and chapstick-shaped, intended as an addition to an unannounced smart home display internally designated as J490. The camera is expected to feature a very low frame rate and will rely on sensors to process movement data locally. While it may offer facial recognition and allow users to pull still images, it will not record video streams.

The design philosophy appears driven by growing consumer concerns regarding over-surveillance and data privacy. By providing only text-based notifications about detected movement or individuals, Apple aims to create a product that stands out in a crowded market. However, Gurman noted that the absence of video evidence could limit the camera’s usefulness to law enforcement during break-ins.

The underlying technology is said to mirror that rumored for upcoming AirPods with integrated cameras. Based on code found in early macOS Tahoe 26.7 builds, those earbuds were expected to feature tiny RGB sensors capable of taking low-resolution still images for Visual Intelligence analysis. Following backlash against Meta’s camera-equipped glasses, reports suggest Apple’s audio wearables will similarly be restricted from video recording or photography.

Alongside the hub and camera, Gurman indicated that Apple plans to release upgraded versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV, all designed to support the expanded Siri AI ecosystem.

  1. No video? That sounds terrible for evidence during a break-in. I need proof, not just a notification saying someone was there.

  2. Finally, a security camera that doesn’t feel like an invasion of privacy. The text-only alerts are a game changer.
