Researchers have identified Antarctic krill in an unexpected environment: deep-sea hydrothermal vents located off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The discovery, made during the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Southern Ocean Expedition in partnership with the Schmidt Ocean Institute, challenges previous assumptions about where these vital crustaceans reside.
Antarctic krill are fundamental to the Southern Ocean ecosystem, serving as a primary food source for penguins, seals, and whales. They also play a key role in recycling nutrients that support the growth of phytoplankton, microscopic algae that form the base of the marine food web. Additionally, krill are commercially harvested in large quantities for use in aquaculture feed and omega-3 dietary supplements.
“Most of them feed on Antarctic krill,” said Kim Bernard, a biological oceanographer at Oregon State University and a National Geographic explorer. “And if they don’t, they feed on something else that feeds directly on Antarctic krill. So they are absolutely fundamental to the functioning and health of that ecosystem.”
The findings were published in the journal Communications Biology. Bernard noted that while krill are typically found swarming near the ocean’s surface—visible enough to be photographed from airplanes—this new habitat extends their known range significantly deeper.
Experts warn that the Southern Ocean is one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth. “It’s one of the most rapidly warming areas on the planet,” Bernard stated, noting that rising temperatures are cascading through the food web and impacting krill populations. Understanding this new deep-sea habitat, particularly its importance for reproductive females, may provide critical insights for conservation efforts aimed at protecting these essential creatures.
