Amsterdam Residents Sue City Over Viral TikTok Chip Shop

Amsterdam Residents Sue City Over Viral TikTok Chip Shop

Residents of one of Amsterdam’s most prestigious districts have filed a lawsuit against the municipality, challenging the licensing of a French fry shop that gained widespread popularity through TikTok.

Last week, the court heard that during peak periods, the line at Fabel Friet on Runstraat extends across the Keizersgracht bridge, one of the city’s three primary canals. The narrow thoroughfare remains congested with tourists awaiting their food seven days a week.

According to the complaint, the influx of visitors has led to significant sanitation and safety issues. Loitering is reported on parked vehicles, sidewalks, and residential steps, while gulls gather to scavenge for food, attracting rats and creating additional litter along the canal street.

  1. A chip shop causing a legal battle? Priorities are definitely skewed here. Maybe they need stricter capacity limits instead of shutting it down.

  2. Amsterdam has always been about tourism, but this is extreme. Where is the line drawn between economic boost and quality of life?

  3. I visited last summer and the queue was insane. It actually feels unfair to the locals who can’t walk down their own street.
