Amazon has effectively barred Meta’s AI assistant, Muse, from conducting transactions on its e-commerce platform. Starting Sunday, users attempting to purchase items through the AI agent encountered an error message stating that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use.
The restriction was first identified by GeekWire, which reported that customers trying to use Muse as a shopping tool would no longer be able to complete orders on Amazon.com. This move signals a growing tension between major tech companies regarding how AI agents interact with third-party services.
Analysts suggest the blockade is partly driven by Amazon’s competitive interests. The retail giant operates its own suite of foundation models and one of the web’s leading inference platforms through AWS. Without a legal mandate to integrate with Meta’s system, Amazon appears to be protecting its own ecosystem.
Beyond competition, there are operational risks associated with agentic commerce. If an AI agent like Muse places an erroneous order, Amazon is responsible for resolving the issue with both the customer and the vendor. Although Meta claims Muse has one of the lower hallucination rates among AI models, it is not immune to errors. Industry observers note that Amazon may prefer to wait for AI technology to mature further before fully embracing autonomous agent-driven shopping.
