Amazon Appoints Cybersecurity Expert Kevin Mandia to Board of Directors

Amazon announced Wednesday that Kevin Mandia, the founder and former CEO of cybersecurity firm Mandiant, has joined its board of directors. The move comes as major technology companies face escalating cyber threats linked to the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence.

In a blog post, Amazon described Mandia as a “widely recognized cybersecurity expert” with extensive experience fighting cyber threats in both the public and private sectors. The company highlighted his background in building and leading organizations that protect complex infrastructures, as well as his role as a general partner at Ballistic Ventures, a venture capital firm he co-founded.

Mandia’s appointment follows a turbulent period for the tech industry regarding security. In July, OpenAI revealed that its autonomous agents had successfully breached the AI platform Hugging Face. Similarly, Anthropic took steps earlier in April to limit the rollout of its Mythos AI model due to concerns that hackers could exploit it for cyberattacks.

Mandia founded Mandiant in 2004 and sold the company to Google in 2022 for $5.4 billion. He departed Google in 2024 and subsequently launched Armadin, a startup that utilizes AI to identify network vulnerabilities. Amazon noted that his perspective would help inform the board’s approach to emerging opportunities and challenges in the security landscape.

According to a securities filing, Mandia was awarded 4,086 shares of Amazon common stock as part of his appointment. The shares are valued at approximately $1 million based on Wednesday’s closing price and will vest in three equal annual installments beginning November 15, 2027. The filing also disclosed that Mandia’s sister-in-law, Kristin Mandia, is an Amazon employee working as a senior online community manager for Amazon Quick, an enterprise AI service.
