Alessia Russo crowned England women’s player of the year

Arsenal striker Alessia Russo has been named England’s women’s player of the year, adding to her previous honor from two seasons ago.

The 27-year-old was recognized for her pivotal role during the 2025-26 campaign, appearing in all 10 matches and netting five goals. Her contributions were instrumental as England recently secured a 3-1 victory over Greece in the first leg of their 2027 World Cup play-off semi-final, where she scored the team’s third goal.

Russo claimed the fan-voted title, beating out fellow Chelsea defenders Lucy Bronze and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. In her acceptance statement, she expressed gratitude for the public’s backing and emphasized the importance of teamwork.

“To receive the award is really special, particularly as it comes directly from the fans. I am so grateful for their support,” Russo said. “A big thank you also to my team-mates – it is always about the collective.”

Russo holds an impressive international record, having scored 31 goals in 68 appearances for her country. England are set to face Greece in the decisive second leg at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Tuesday.
