From his residence in Portugal, renowned artist Ai Weiwei has discussed themes of conflict, diplomacy, and the contemporary condition, alongside the reveal of his latest monumental piece, titled Mushrooms, situated on Sydney Harbour.
The journey to Ai Weiwei’s secluded estate in the Alentejo region highlights the isolation of his current living situation. Travelers passing through the area often note the surreal quality of the landscape, characterized by silent villages bathed in pale sunlight and a conspicuous lack of visible human activity.
Ai Weiwei has resided at this Portuguese farm for the past six years. Upon arrival, visitors are guided into a massive structure designed as a replica of his former studio in Shanghai, which was controversially demolished. The interior is defined by towering wooden columns and an intricate network of beams supporting extremely high ceilings, creating a cavernous atmosphere.
Despite the grand scale of the space, the walls are devoid of artwork, and there are no immediate indicators of ongoing creative production within the studio-like environment.
