A group of three male African wild dogs has achieved the longest recorded journey by a land mammal in Africa, traveling nearly 2,500 miles across the continent in search of a mate. The record-breaking expedition covers 2,485 miles (4,000km) and highlights the species’ extraordinary ability to traverse landscapes increasingly dominated by human development.
The brothers navigated through Zambia over an eight-month period, covering roughly 260 miles in a direct line. However, their actual path was nearly ten times that distance as they zigzagged through fragmented terrain. They managed to skirt major urban obstacles, including the capital city of Lusaka and heavily industrialized zones, while connecting various wildlife strongholds.
Published in the journal Ecology, the research offers cautious optimism regarding the connectivity of wild dog populations across eastern and southern Africa. Professor Scott Creel of Montana State University, the study’s lead author, noted that the findings suggest populations may remain more linked than previously believed.
“It’s plausible to believe that every major wild dog population in eastern and southern Africa, other than fenced ones, are potentially connected,” Creel said. He added, however, that conservation efforts face a dual reality: while the animals demonstrate resilience, threats remain severe.
The study underscores the dangers these predators face, particularly from illegal poaching snares. While the male trio succeeded, two of three females tracked in the same study died in such snares. Additionally, a group of three female wild dogs nearly completed an equally impressive journey but were forced to stop when one became trapped.
African wild dogs are among the continent’s rarest predators, with an estimated population of only 6,000 individuals remaining in the wild. As highly social animals, they live in packs and hunt cooperatively. Because they cannot breed within their birth pack, young adults typically disperse at age two or three to find new territories and mates.
Researchers observed that surviving pack members repeatedly returned to the locations where their companions died, a behavior often indicative of the loss of a group member.
Bruce Ellender, co-author and Kafue Conservation director for The Nature Conservancy, emphasized the need for broader conservation strategies. He argued that protected areas cannot be viewed in isolation, stating that species roaming over large distances require connected landscapes to survive.
The team recommends establishing natural land corridors outside of existing protected areas to link habitats fractured by roads, towns, and farms. Such connectivity is essential for the long-term survival of wide-ranging species like wild dogs and elephants.
