John Griffin, the founder of Addison Lee, has been ordered to pay £20.5 million in unpaid taxes following a decisive ruling by a UK tribunal. The panel rejected Griffin’s long-standing assertion that he should be classified as a non-domiciled individual for tax purposes.
Griffin had maintained his status as a non-dom based on his emotional and cultural connection to Ireland. He stated, “I was and am besotted with Ireland, infatuated with Ireland. I believe that I have always been and am Irish.”
However, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) successfully challenged this position, arguing that Griffin’s residence in England since childhood negated his claim to non-dom status. The tribunal agreed with the tax authority, leading to the substantial tax bill.
Honestly, spending decades in England and expecting tax breaks seems a bit rich. Fair ruling.
Does this mean the non-dom loophole is finally closing for everyone, or just wealthy founders?
Ouch. Two million quid is a steep price for claiming deep Irish roots while living in London since childhood.
