A Guide to Blocking Time-Wasting Apps on iPhone With Screen Time

Regaining control over smartphone habits is simpler than ever thanks to Screen Time, a native feature on iPhones and iPads. Whether you are trying to cut down on specific applications or want to abstain from your device entirely during designated hours, this tool offers robust options for managing screen usage.

For parents, Screen Time serves as an effective solution for setting boundaries on a child’s device. Those unfamiliar with the feature can easily access it by navigating to Settings > Screen Time within their iOS system.

Monitoring Usage Patterns

To begin, users can view a daily usage chart at the top of the Screen Time menu. Selecting See All App & Website Activity reveals a detailed breakdown, including daily averages by category, total unlocks, most-used apps, and notification frequency. For individuals with multiple Apple devices, a Devices toggle allows filtering data by specific hardware. Users can also switch between weekly and daily views using the timeline arrows.

Configuring Restrictions

Before applying limits, it is advisable to configure the Always Allowed section. This ensures essential apps remain accessible even when restrictions are active. The Contacts dropdown further refines permissions, allowing calls only from specific saved contacts if desired.

Two primary tools help enforce these boundaries:

  • Downtime: This feature restricts access to only Always Allowed apps and permitted contacts. It can be toggled manually or scheduled automatically, providing a five-minute warning before activation begins.
  • App Limits: By selecting Add Limit, users can apply daily time caps to entire categories—such as Social, Games, or Entertainment—or select individual apps. Limits can be customized for different days of the week. When a limit is nearing completion, a reminder appears; once reached, attempting to open the app displays a prompt offering options to ignore the limit for one minute, 15 minutes, or the remainder of the day.

Additionally, enabling Share Across Devices ensures that these limits sync seamlessly across all iPhones, iPads, and Macs linked to the same Apple Account, eliminating the need to configure each device individually.

Parental Controls and Safety

Screen Time is particularly valuable for managing children’s devices within an Apple Family Sharing group. Parents can tap their child’s name to adjust settings tailored for younger users. Key features include:

  • Screen Distance: Alerts users if the device is held too close to the face.
  • Communication Limits: Restricts messaging to pre-approved contacts, though this applies only to first-party Apple apps like Messages and FaceTime, not third-party services like WhatsApp.
  • Communication Safety: Detects potentially explicit images and offers guidance.
  • Content & Privacy Restrictions: Allows parents to disable features such as Apple Wallet, prevent app installations, or lock permission settings.

Children may request parental approval to bypass certain restrictions, such as age-restricted App Store downloads. To finalize the setup, parents should use the Lock Screen Time Settings button to create a dedicated PIN, preventing the child from altering the configuration.

Enhancing Enforcement

For those seeking stricter enforcement, setting a Screen Time passcode is crucial. Without one, users can simply ignore limits repeatedly. To increase accountability, some users ask a friend to set the PIN and only provide it during emergencies. Others store the PIN behind a complex password kept in an inconvenient location, making bypassing the restrictions tedious. When combined with iPhone Focus modes to reduce notifications, Screen Time offers a comprehensive strategy for reclaiming time and focus.
