A Decade Later, Colin Kaepernick Still Seeks to Play Football

It has been ten years since former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick ignited a national debate by kneeling during the national anthem, and he maintains that his battle is far from over. In his newly released memoir, “The Perilous Fight,” Kaepernick explores his journey from a childhood marked by racial hostility to becoming one of the most polarizing figures in sports history.

Kaepernick, who was adopted by a white family in a predominantly white community, recounts an incident at age eight when older boys used a racial slur and threatened to tie him to a tree. He chose not to report the assault, fearing his parents would not believe him, but acknowledges the event was pivotal in shaping his understanding of his identity.

He found refuge and perspective through football, noting that the sport offered a clear-cut environment where performance outweighed subjective judgment. After playing college ball at the University of Nevada, Reno, he was drafted by the 49ers in 2011, leading the team to NFC championship games in 2013 and 2014 and appearing in Super Bowl XLVII.

However, Kaepernick grew increasingly distressed by police violence against Black individuals. Citing the deaths of Mario Woods in San Francisco, Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, and Philando Castile in Minnesota, he initiated his protest at the start of the 2016 season. He stated that he could not show pride in systems he viewed as oppressive and discriminatory.

The protest triggered intense backlash, and Kaepernick has not played an NFL game since the conclusion of the 2016 season. He subsequently filed a grievance alleging that team owners colluded to blacklist him, a claim that was resolved with a settlement in 2019. Despite his current status as a free agent, Kaepernick’s latest writings reveal that he remains eager to return to the field.
