Users with a Google Pixel 8 or a more recent Android device can repurpose their smartphones into compact desktop computers by utilizing the operating system’s Desktop Mode. The process begins by linking the phone to an external display via a high-speed USB-C cable. Upon connection, a notification appears offering a choice between mirroring the screen or activating Desktop Mode; selecting the latter enables a desktop-style interface.
Once the mode is active, users can attach input peripherals, such as a mouse and keyboard, through Bluetooth or a USB hub. Applications open as resizable windows, and a start menu provides access to the full App Drawer. Standard navigation gestures remain functional, including pulling down from the top of the screen to view notifications. According to testing by ZDNet, the feature operates smoothly even when multiple applications are running simultaneously.
A notable advantage of this setup is its ability to preserve workspace continuity. If a user disconnects and later reconnects their device, the active window layout is retained, allowing them to resume their tasks without interruption. However, there are limitations: users cannot pin applications to a home screen and must instead launch them from the start menu. Additionally, most mobile-optimized games do not support keyboard inputs, though some content creators have managed to run Steam games natively by utilizing third-party tools like GameNative.
As of now, Google has not confirmed whether Desktop Mode will be extended to non-Pixel Android devices.
