Nor’easter Triggers Emergencies and Flooding Across US Northeast

A powerful nor’easter storm has swept across the northeastern United States, forcing New York and New Jersey to declare states of emergency as dangerous coastal flooding and severe weather disrupt daily life. The storm, which is expected to impact areas from Virginia to Maine, has brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, and significant inundation to low-lying coastal regions.

The US National Weather Service issued warnings for “dangerous coastal flooding and beach conditions,” a forecast exacerbated by Saturday’s full moon. In New Jersey, communities such as Surf City and Manasquan saw streets and homes flooded, with residents navigating the waters via kayak. Governor Mikie Sherrill urged New Jersey residents to take the storm seriously, remain alert, and adhere to local guidance.

The severity of the storm was underscored by reports from Brooklyn, where CBS News confirmed that a man was killed after being struck by a falling tree. New York officials warned of wind gusts reaching up to 55mph (86km/h), posing risks of additional downed trees and power lines. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents against unnecessary travel and cautioned against driving or walking through floodwaters.

Infrastructure and travel have been heavily affected. PowerOutage.com reported that more than 100,000 households across the northeast have lost electricity. The Federal Aviation Administration has urged passengers to verify flight status with airlines, while FlightAware data shows over 2,400 flights delayed and nearly 1,200 grounded.

Sporting and cultural events also faced cancellations. The Boston Red Sox relocated their final game against the Chicago Cubs to Florida, and a professional football match between Red Bull New York and St Louis City SC was called off. Additionally, the Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park and a concert by Ed Sheeran at Gillette Stadium near Boston were cancelled due to safety concerns.
