‘The Simpsons’ Showrunner Teases Season 38 Premiere, ‘Treehouse of Horror,’ and Upcoming Movie

Executive producer Matt Selman has shared fresh details regarding the upcoming thirty-eighth season of “The Simpsons,” including insights into the season premiere, the annual “Treehouse of Horror” special, and updates on the long-awaited theatrical film.

The season opener, titled “The Children’s Book Job,” airs Sunday, Sept. 27, on Fox. The episode parodies classic children’s literature and features guest voice actress Emma Thompson as Constance Clavinger, a charismatic British author invited to Springfield Elementary for a benefit to prevent the school’s closure. Thompson described her character as a “drunken pepper pot” who gets intoxicated at the airport bar, forcing Homer to embark on a frantic adventure to get her to the book fair on time—a scenario Selman compared to the movie “Get Him to the Greek.” Comedian Colin Jost also appears as himself, reading from his own children’s book to an unimpressed audience.

Selman characterized the episode as a “love letter” to generational children’s book illustrators such as Richard Scarry and Eric Carle. The narrative includes a surreal daydream sequence where Springfield residents transform into characters from iconic books like “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus,” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” Beyond the premiere, viewers can expect episodes exploring neurodiversity in “Testing 1-2-3” and a baby chimp subplot in “Diary of a Chimpy Kid.”

Looking ahead to the Oct. 25 installment, “Treehouse of Horror XXXVII,” Selman revealed it opens with a mashup of “The Simpsons” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” produced by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. Segments include a storyline where Homer transitions through different husbands, featuring Tiffany Haddish as Marge’s sassy best friend; a body-swap horror tale inspired by “Pet Sematary”; and a mystery involving Patty and Selma trapping Homer in endless driving films.

The season also continues a promotional partnership with Jack in the Box, featuring a “Munchie Meal of Horror” with collectible glow-in-the-dark cups. Selman highlighted obscure Easter eggs on the packaging, including nods to the 1970s Jack in the Box mascot gang and a callback to Bart’s twin brother Hugo from Season 8. The cups sold out rapidly, prompting secondary market prices around $200.

Regarding the next “Simpsons” movie, currently scheduled for release on Sept. 3, 2027, Selman confirmed the script is complete and the project is of the highest quality.
