The United States Men’s National Team claimed a decisive 4-1 victory over Peru in an international friendly held at Inter co Stadium in Orlando on Saturday, delivering a strong performance for head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
The match served as a showcase for emerging talent, with Pochettino handing senior debuts to 11 players from his available roster. The hosts took an early lead when Justin Ellis converted in the fourth minute, though Peru equalized through Gianluca Lapadula 11 minutes later, making it 1-1 at the break.
The second half belonged entirely to the Americans. Diego Kochen replaced Matt Freese in goal, continuing a busy night of first caps. Malik Tillman restored the lead in the 67th minute with a confidently taken penalty, becoming the first U.S. player to score in three consecutive games since Clint Dempsey in 2016.
Julian Hall doubled Tillman’s tally just five minutes later, finishing a precise cross from Sebastian Berhalter to make it 3-1. Berhalter added a spectacular fourth goal in stoppage time, curling a strike from outside the box into the far corner.
Pochettino rotated his squad extensively, introducing fresh legs including Mathis Albert, Zavier Gozo, Antonee Robinson, and Adri Mehmeti. The manager praised Ellis’ composure, noting he had predicted the defender would score at his former club’s stadium.
Standout performances came from Tillman, who thrived in a free playmaking role, and center-backs George Campbell and Auston Trusty, who remained composed under pressure. Yunus Musah also looked sharper than in previous outings for the Argentine coach.
With the 2030 World Cup cycle approaching, the friendly provided Pochettino with valuable opportunities to assess his squad depth. Midfield options now include a deep pool of talent featuring Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, and Aidan Morris alongside the night’s debutants.
Eleven debutants is impressive for squad depth, but beating Peru this comfortably feels suspicious. Are they resting their best players?
Berhalter’s curler from distance in stoppage time was pure class. I almost dropped my phone when that went into the far corner!
Malik Tillman in that playmaking role is exactly what we needed. Three straight games scoring—Clint Dempsey hasn’t done that since 2016.
Forty-one? Really? Peru must have missed the memo. This friendly feels less like prep and more like a warm-up act.
