Earlier this month, Amelia Dimoldenberg announced that her popular celebrity interview format, “Chicken Shop Date,” would be concluding. On Saturday night, while hosting “SNL U.K.,” she humorously addressed the reason behind the show’s cancellation during her opening monologue.
“I found out something devastating. Apparently, these celebrities weren’t coming onto date me,” Dimoldenberg told the audience. “They were coming on to promote their work!”
She recalled a specific interaction with actor Andrew Garfield, noting that the misunderstanding made more sense in hindsight. “It makes so much more sense now. Andrew Garfield had a film out! When he kept saying, ‘I’m looking forward to the big release,’ I thought that was a sex thing,” she said.
Dimoldenberg also engaged in some playful shade regarding singer Ed Sheeran, who has recently faced backlash for removing Macklemore from his tour following a political speech about Palestine. When an image of Elmo appeared on screen during her bit about interviewing high-profile figures, she exclaimed, “No, the other one!” as Sheeran’s face flashed up, directing her joke at the singer rather than the Sesame Street character.
Reflecting on her career, Dimoldenberg shared that her early experiences at a London youth center taught her a valuable lesson: “I am an awkward girl, and there’s no shame in that. Just huge profit.” She encouraged the audience to embrace authenticity across all platforms, from red carpets to upcoming projects, including “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and various “Saturday Night Live U.K.” sketches.
Concluding her monologue with a signature wit, Dimoldenberg added, “Just like the chickens I love to eat, you don’t have to have range.”
