The iPhone’s Always-On Display feature allows users to view key information like the time, notifications, and widgets without unlocking the device. However, some users have reported that the display occasionally turns off despite the feature being enabled. Fortunately, most causes are straightforward to address.
It is important to note that Always-On Display is only available on specific iPhone models: the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. The feature is enabled by default, but users can verify its status by navigating to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.
Several contextual factors can cause the display to turn off intentionally. These include having the iPhone face-down, the device being obscured from view, or the phone not detecting a paired Apple Watch nearby. Additionally, the feature may deactivate if there is no interaction with the phone for extended periods, if the front-facing camera is dirty, or when connecting to CarPlay to minimize driver distractions. Using Continuity Camera may also disable the display to conserve battery.
Two adjustable settings that commonly interfere with Always-On Display are Low Power Mode and Focus modes. Low Power Mode can be disabled via the Control Center or through Settings > Battery > Power Mode on iPhone 15 and later. On older models, this setting is located under the main Battery menu. Users with newer iPhones should also consider disabling Adaptive Power Mode, which automatically reactivates Low Power Mode when the battery drops below 20 percent.
Sleep Focus mode prevents the Always-On Display from functioning. To ensure Sleep Focus is off, users should open the Control Center, tap Focus, and deselect Sleep if necessary. If the Health app automatically enables Sleep Focus at scheduled bedtimes, users can disable this by accessing Sleep Focus settings, turning off the Schedule toggle, or adjusting the schedule options.
For other Focus modes, users can manually enable Always-On Display by going to the Focus Mode settings, selecting Add Filter under Focus Filters, and enabling the Always On Display system filter. If the issue persists, toggling Raise to Wake in Settings > Display & Brightness or restarting the iPhone may help resolve temporary software glitches.
