Jaguar Land Rover Confirms Voluntary Redundancy Programme Amid Cost-Cutting Drive

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially launched a voluntary redundancy programme, marking a significant restructuring effort one year after a major cyber attack halted production for over a month. The car manufacturer stated that the initiative is necessary to achieve approximately £1.7bn in savings over the next two years as it adapts to shifting global market dynamics.

While recent reports from The Times suggested that up to 4,000 positions could be at risk due to falling sales and the impact of tariffs, JLR told the BBC it had not confirmed specific job loss figures. Instead, the company emphasized that the move aims to “simplify” operations and enhance organizational resilience.

A spokesperson confirmed that employees and trade union partners were informed on the same day that salaried and management staff are being offered the opportunity to leave voluntarily. “We will share further information with our colleagues first,” the statement read.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from labor representatives. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham described the situation as a “perfect storm” for the automotive sector, arguing that prolonged decline has been overlooked by successive governments. She noted that “death by a thousand cuts” has been affecting the industry for some time.

Union officials engaged in intensive discussions over the weekend to explore ways to mitigate job losses. Graham confirmed that she and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds plan to meet with JLR chief executive PB Balaji in the coming week.

Des Quinn, a Unite national officer, acknowledged the distress caused to workers, describing it as an “incredibly worrying and stressful time.” He added that the union is working around the clock to secure the best possible outcome for its members.
