Ancient Materials and Modern Adhesives Complete Sagrada Familia’s Final Towers

The restoration of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, a masterpiece that has been under construction for over 140 years, reached a critical milestone with the completion of its tallest spire. The project’s completion was made possible by blending historical architectural vision with advanced modern materials.

The central tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ and reaching 172.5 meters, stands as the structure’s highest point. To achieve this, engineers utilized traditional materials such as stone and steel, alongside a novel 21st-century structural adhesive. This modern bonding agent is significant because it allows for the construction of taller, thinner walls, effectively overcoming the structural limitations associated with the building’s original design parameters.

According to the technical director of the basilica, Jaume Coll Planella, the combination of these materials provides enhanced safety margins compared to Gaudí’s original specifications. The integration of modern adhesive technology enabled the realization of the architect’s ambitious vertical goals while ensuring the longevity and stability of the final tower.

  1. This is exactly why I love this project. Preserving history while innovating for the future is a beautiful architectural philosophy.

  2. 172.5 meters! That finally tops the nearby Church of Santa Maria del Mar. Barcelona can officially claim the highest sacred spire now.

  3. Wait, they are using modern adhesives? I thought they were sticking strictly to Gaudí’s original methods. Does this change the aesthetic?

  4. It is wild to think construction started in 1882. The blend of old stone and new glue seems like the perfect compromise.
