Pierce Charles, the Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper, was instrumental in preserving a clean sheet, making several crucial saves before denying Paris Saint-Germain star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from the penalty spot in the second half. The save prevented a likely equalizer and kept the visitors in contention.
With the clock ticking past 97 minutes, it appeared the game might end in a draw, which would have been a solid result for Michael O’Neill’s side after six years in the top tier. However, Pierce’s older brother Shea, playing as a midfielder for Fulham, struck in the 99th minute to snatch all three points for Northern Ireland.
