Cyrena Samba-Mayela, the French sprint hurdler and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, has been placed under a temporary suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). The sanction stems from failures to accurately disclose her location to anti-doping authorities.
The AIU confirmed the measure on Friday, following the imposition of the initial sanction on September 18. If the proceedings conclude unfavorably, the 25-year-old athlete could face a ban from competition lasting up to two years.
Samba-Mayela rose to prominence by capturing the silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the Paris Games last year. She had previously withdrawn from the European Championships in August due to an injury.
In response to the allegations, a representative for the athlete clarified to the French news agency AFP that Samba-Mayela has never tested positive for prohibited substances. The spokesperson emphasized that the current investigation is strictly limited to administrative failures in whereabouts reporting.
“The procedure mentioned is ongoing before the AIU and concerns exclusively administrative whereabouts requirements, and not the use of any substance whatsoever,” the representative stated. “She continues to respond within the allotted timeframes and to co-operate fully.”
Under international anti-doping regulations, elite competitors must provide detailed information about their daily whereabouts to facilitate unannounced testing. Accumulating three violations within a 12-month period, such as missing a test or providing incorrect location data, can lead to significant sanctions.
