Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky directly blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe. Zelensky referred to the Russian leader as “patient zero” regarding the spread of war in the region, citing Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as the primary catalyst for the instability.
In addition to assigning responsibility for the aggression, Zelensky issued a call to action for global leaders to reduce their reliance on Russian energy. He specifically asked nations to cut back on purchasing oil from Russia, arguing that such economic pressure is essential to forcing Moscow to resolve the conflict swiftly.
